Take 2: Harbour Cruise!

March 3 @ 10:00 - 12:30

Meet us just outside the Two Oceans Aquarium for our first ever boat trip as Explorers! Thanks to the same company that does the Hop On Hop Off Red bus tours through the peninsula, we’re going to touring the Waterfront on the water! There’s no hopping off this boat during the 25 minute trip, but we’ll be able to see several key attractions, including the SAS Somerset (the only remaining boom defence vessel left in the world) and the southern hemisphere’s largest…

Bountiful Biomimicry!

March 10 @ 09:00 - 12:00
Noordhoek Common

I can hear you all scratching your heads wondering what on earth Biomimicry is! I too didn’t know until a friend recently started working in this field. It’s truly amazing! Biomimicry looks at the brilliant way Nature has designed plants and then uses that as inspiration for all designs that humans need in order to live sustainably. Watch this short clip to understand it better… Now, today, at the Noordhoek Common, Cape Town’s own biomimicry specialist, Barbara Jones, is coming…

Take 2: Muizenberg History Walk

May 5 @ 08:30 - 12:00

Today we will be joining a member of the Muizenberg Historical Society, Tony Rozemeyer and one of his sidekicks at a venue still to be decided (its likely to be a church hall in Lakeside). Tony has lovingly created a large display of the historical buildings that can be found in and around Muizenberg. From experience, we both thought this would be ideal for getting the info across, especially as Take 2 is a larger group than last year! After…

Take 2: Kalk Bay Caves

June 2 @ 08:30 - 12:30

Today we’re going to be doing something I have wanted to do for as long as I have been in Cape Town – explore the caves above Kalk Bay! Today we are so fortunate to be partnering with the Cape Leopard Trust and their fantastic team to venture into the hillsides and to explore some caves, and learn about the bats that live there, as well as the flora and fauna of these mountains that have just weathered some serious…

Today we have the privilege of being taken by renowned Cape Town author and historian, Dr. Helen Robinson through the streets of Wynberg as she regales us with the history these streets have seen. Dr Helen Robinson is 87 years old, and still writing books about Cape Town and its past! Please do have a special word with your kids about the necessary respect we need to show her. Here’s a little bit more about her: Dr Helen Robinson began…

Disturbing District 6

August 11 @ 09:45 - 12:00

This week we’re going to be visiting another area that will teach us more about South Africa’s past and the effects of the Group Area’s Act. This is a disturbing piece of South Africa history, and I’m hoping we’ll also be able to find the dazzling part of it – the testimony to the spirit of men and women who rose above their circumstances and made the most of a very hard hand of cards.

Take 2: Liesbeck River Study

September 1 @ 08:45 - 11:30

I am so excited to be finally doing this outing! This little gem of a river has been on my radar since my early days in Cape Town. I have always loved the idea of tracing a river to its source, like the explorers did in days gone by. What I love about this outing is that Anton, from the Centre for Conservation Education, will be taking us to two sites along this river, which will give us a great…

Kloof Nek Water Treatment Plant

September 8 @ 09:45 - 12:00

Given that we’re in the middle of a serious water crisis, I thought that it would be appropriate to visit a water treatment plant, and learn about the ways the City of Cape Town is trying to conserve water and educate its citizens. I certainly don’t know enough about the journey of water from a water body into my tap, so this is sure to be an eye opener for us all! (We’ve had to bring this outing forward two…
